About the Distillery
Founded in 1955 and located on the slopes of Mount Asama, an active volcano in central Japan, Karuizawa Distillery became celebrated for its bold, sherry-cask-matured whiskies made from 100% Scottish barley. Its unique climate - cool, misty, and volcanic - fostered slow maturation and exceptionally high natural ABVs. The distillery ceased operations in 2000 and was later demolished, leaving behind a limited number of casks that have since become some of the most collectible whiskies in the world.
