Ichiro’s Double Distilleries - Ghost Series No. 8
An extraordinarily rare Japanese blended malt, Ichiro’s Double Distilleries - Ghost Series No. 8 unites the spirit of two generations of Japanese whisky-making: the legendary lost Hanyu Distillery and the modern cult icon Chichibu Distillery. Bottled in 2016 for Spirits for Small Change, this release is among the rarest expressions ever produced under the Double Distilleries name, with an astonishingly small outturn of only 26 bottles worldwide.
Created by Ichiro Akuto, founder of Chichibu and grandson of the Hanyu distillery owner, the Double Distilleries concept symbolizes the bridge between past and future. Mature stocks from the silent Hanyu distillery were married with young but highly acclaimed Chichibu malt, resulting in whiskies that carry both historical depth and contemporary precision.
Bottled at a commanding 60.1% ABV, Ghost Series No. 8 represents an exceptionally limited interpretation of this philosophy - a whisky where the fading echoes of Hanyu meet the vibrant energy of Chichibu. More than a blended malt, it is a symbolic passing of the torch between two eras of Japanese whisky craftsmanship.
With just 26 bottles produced, this release stands firmly among the rarest modern Japanese whiskies, coveted not only for its scarcity but also for the historical narrative captured within each bottle.

About the Distilleries
Hanyu, founded in 1941, became one of Japan’s most mythical lost distilleries after its closure in 2000. Its remaining casks, preserved by Ichiro Akuto, later achieved legendary status among collectors. Chichibu, established by Akuto in 2008, quickly rose to international acclaim for its meticulous craftsmanship and bold yet elegant style. The Double Distilleries series uniquely combines these two worlds - preserving the legacy of Hanyu while celebrating the future embodied by Chichibu.
