Karuizawa 1975 Single Sherry Cask #6890 - 40yo

A remarkable release from the legendary closed Japanese distillery, Karuizawa 1975 Single Sherry Cask #6890 represents the kind of bottling that has made Karuizawa one of the most revered names in the world of whisky collecting.

Distilled in 1975 and matured for an extraordinary 40 years in a single sherry cask, this rare expression was bottled in 2016 at a natural cask strength of 56.9% ABV. Drawn exclusively from cask #6890, the release yielded just 199 bottles, making it a highly sought-after example of mature Karuizawa.

By the time this whisky was bottled, the distillery had already been silent for many years. As a result, every remaining cask represented an increasingly scarce piece of Japanese whisky history. The combination of a 1975 vintage, four decades of maturation, and single-cask provenance places this bottling among the most desirable releases from Karuizawa's final stocks.

Like the finest old Karuizawa bottlings, it showcases the distillery's dedication to long maturation and its celebrated relationship with sherry casks, a hallmark that helped define the house style and establish its legendary reputation among collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.

Today, bottles such as this stand not only as exceptional whiskies but also as historical artifacts from one of Japan's most iconic lost distilleries.

About the Distillery

Located at the foot of Mount Asama, Karuizawa Distillery operated from 1955 until its closure in 2000. Although production ceased long ago, the distillery's reputation has continued to grow, driven by the extraordinary quality and rarity of its remaining stocks.

Known for producing heavily sherried single malts in a distinctly old-school style, Karuizawa has become one of the most collectible names in whisky. Mature single-cask releases from the 1960s and 1970s are especially prized, often achieving record prices at auctions and occupying a place among the most coveted Japanese whiskies ever bottled.
