Caroni County, named after the Caroni River, was a historic region in Trinidad and Tobago. Stretching from the Central Range hills to the Caroni Plains and Caroni Swamp, it held geographical diversity.

In 1923, Caroni emerged on the grounds of the old Caroni Sugar factory. Its destiny took a significant turn in 2001 when, despite public protests, the Trinidad Government sold 49% of Rum Distillers Limited (Caroni’s Rum Division) to Angostura for $35 million. Caroni remained operational until its eventual closure in 2002.

Caroni rum, a legend born from a forgotten Trinidadian distillery, captured hearts. In 2004, just a year after Caroni’s closure, Luca Gargano, renowned in the spirits world and owner of Velier, a distinguished importer, discovered this treasure. Gargano elevated rum-making to an art form.

Caroni (1975) Limited was Trinidad’s largest agricultural enterprise from 1975 to 2003, once the country’s largest employer. The controversial dissolution of the company marked Trinidad’s shift towards the service and production sectors.
