The Blairmont plantation, established by Lambert Blair, found its place on the West Bank of the River Berbice in the early 19th century. It is a name intertwined with the rich history of Guyana’s rum production. The roots of distillation at Blairmont can be traced back to 1862, marking the beginning of a legacy that would endure for generations.
However, the distillery at Blairmont eventually closed its doors in 1962, leaving behind a lingering mystery regarding the fate of its two-column Savalle still.
Blairmont Rum remains alive, thanks to Diamond Distillery!
While the physical presence of Blairmont distillery ceased to exist, its spirit and style continued to be preserved and reproduced at Uitvlugt distillery. Uitvlugt took on the responsibility of upholding the traditions and techniques of Blairmont.
Over the years, the landscape of Guyanese rum underwent significant changes. In 1999, Uitvlugt distillery closed its doors, passing the baton to Diamond distillery. Diamond, now the sole remaining distillery in Guyana, became the custodian of the esteemed wood stills from the former distilleries of Port Mourant, Versailles, Enmore, and Uitvlugt.
Today, Diamond distillery stands as a testament to the rich heritage of Guyana’s rum-making tradition. Within its walls, the legendary wood stills from the iconic distilleries of the past find their new home, preserving the unique flavors and styles that have captivated rum enthusiasts worldwide.
That is why Blairmont spirits are such valuable acquisitions for any collection, whether as individual bottles or as a complete set.
