Karuizawa, a tranquil mountain town at the foot of the active Mount Asama, is the birthplace of this extraordinary whisky. In 1956, the beverage titan, Daikoku Budoshu, amplified their flourishing dominion by erecting a distillery with the sole aim of crafting a single malt for their distinguished blends. Christened ‘Ocean’, the distillery soon started working with the revered Golden Promise barley, mirroring Macallan‘s choice, and matured their unique spirit in sherry casks.
The 1980s and 90s brought an economic surge to Japan, birthing a generation drawn towards the new and the modern, and away from what they considered antiquated. Consequently, the appeal of robust, character-filled whiskies, like those crafted at Karuizawa, started to wane. Despite its small scale and the robust personality of its whiskies, Karuizawa fell out of favor, leading to its closure in 2000 and ultimate demolition in 2016.
In 2007, independent bottler Number One Drinks acquired the remaining stocks of the then-named Ocean Karuizawa Distillery. The introduction of this distinctive whisky to the European market, coupled with its limited availability, triggered an exciting frenzy among whisky enthusiasts and collectors, driving a thriving secondary market.
