Tasting of Pirates by zuckerundzeste.de

Distilia is a group of rum enthusiasts, ranging from those with the curiosity of a child discovering new bottles to the refined connoisseurs who meticulously assess every detail of rum flavor and bottle aesthetics. It’s no wonder that our collection, The Golden Age of Piracy, bottled in 2022, was appreciated by Hendrik Fröhlich from zuckerundzeste.de

So, what are the specific rums in the three evaluated bottles from The Golden Age of Piracy by Distilia?

All the rums were bottled at cask strength and without additives, released in limited edition 700ml bottles. Each bottle tells a unique flavor story, much like each pirate represents a distinct personality.

Samuel Bellamy

Black Sam Bellamy was a pirate for only a year, from 1716 to 1717, but he became the wealthiest pirate of all time. He captured about 53 ships and plundered treasures worth $140 million, which he generously shared with his crew. It’s no wonder that Bellamy’s pirates called him the “Robin Hood of the Seas,”” taking from the rich to give to the poor.

In short, that’s how Hendrik Fröhlich described our pirate Sam Bellamy.

Now, what does Hendrik Fröhlich say about Uitvlught Samuel Bellamy himself?

At first sniff, we detect a somewhat rough rum, and in the deep of the glass, a slight alcohol presence, which, after a while, relaxes a bit to breathe.

In taste, herbs, spices, woody notes, and a light acidity dominate. Surprisingly, I hardly sense any bitterness notes, which makes drinking such an old rum easier. However, we don’t think that the alcohol integration is optimal.

Uitvlught was rated at 85/100 because Hendrik Fröhlich notes that “the finish could also be a bit longer” Samuel Bellamy had his years, but he was still going strong when he was capturing ships, so the rum itself can’t be an “Endless Story.” Nevertheless, we appreciate the high rating.

Woodes Rogers

New Yarmouth 1994 27YO #435089 67.1% Rogers The Golden Age of PiracyAs Hendrik Fröhlich observes, the “first royal governor of the Bahamas, which in 1718 was home to about 2000 pirates, and Rogers’ main task was to either drive out pirates or convince them to stop piracy.” Woodes Rogers was like Antonio Vivaldi, with the difference being that the latter mainly taught music lessons to women.

Hendrik Fröhlich noticed that with our Woodes Rogers New Yarmouth, there were “appropriately high expectations” due to the bottling year of 1994. So, how did our Woodes Rogers from The Golden Age of Piracy fare?

This aroma develops gradually as the rum breathes. So give it plenty of time. Initially, notes of heavily baked cookies, salted caramel, leather, various spices, cocoa, and very, very subtle glue aromas dominate. Extremely inviting nose.

“On the palate, fewer fruits than expected. The aroma of coconut is present but not prominent,” notes Hendrik Fröhlich. It’s a bit like Woodes Rogers himself, who gave a chance to those who had strayed and needed to turn away from theft and robbery.

“The texture is beautiful, as is the alcohol content,” which we consider an asset for our New Yarmouth Woodes Rogers from The Golden Age of Piracy. Especially since our rum was compared to Artesanal and Tara.

I believe it’s aromatic between somewhat herbal Artesanal rum and more fruity spirits like Tara. A very long finish, which also leaves sweet notes on the palate, is a successful conclusion for this rum.

This ultimately gave us a very good rating: 92/100.

Charles Vane

Considered one of the most skilled pirates, Charles Vane had exceptionally good navigational and combat abilities. Such is our Long Pond Charles Vane from The Golden Age of Piracy, not only in Hendrik Fröhlich’s general opinion but also with a rating of 93/100.

The first nose initially reminds me of Hampden, but the fruity esters don’t seem quite as fermented. We find peach, pineapple, papaya, and a bit of glue. Plus, woody notes, but despite 38 years, they are limited and perfectly integrated. Nutty aromas and some black tea round off the nose.

Hendrik Fröhlich notes that Long Pond Charles Vane by Distilia “On the palate, LP gives the impression of being exceptionally relaxed; the alcohol has been perfectly integrated with the 38-year-old barrel.” Thus, Charles Vane’s Long Pond is like a pearl pulled from the sea, appreciated by many rum enthusiasts.

An exceptionally well-balanced and unique rum from Long Pond, as evidenced by these words:

In taste, fruity aromas are not as dominant for us as they were in the nose, but woody notes take up more space without becoming too intense or even too bitter. The rum gives the impression of being perfectly matured and exceptionally well-balanced. This rum is also excellent cinema, and we really liked it!

In summary, with ratings of 85/100 for Uitvlught Samuel Bellamy, 92/100 for New Yarmouth Woodes Rogers, and 93/100 for Long Pond Charles Vane, we believe these are excellent scores and thank you for taking the time to thoroughly evaluate our rums from The Golden Age of Piracy.
